Online Age of Empires Rumoured

Or other MMO project...?

Speculation abound today that Ensemble Studios (creators of the Age of Empires series) are currently working on a secret massively-multiplayer online project, which could be a new direction in the hugely successful Age of Empires real-time strategy series. What is clear immediately is that the developer are definitely at work on something of this variety, a job listing on their site seeking an "experienced server architect to assist in creating a world-class massively multiplayer game," including "experience with shipping an existing massively multiplayer game."

World of Warcraft, Blizzard's immensely popular RTS series, has in recent months been making massive leaps forward in the MMO genre, and is already believed to be the world's second most popular online title, something which may be influencing Ensemble's latest move. Of course, what we don't know is whether said MMO title will be an Age of Empires game - or an entirely new title.

Microsoft are certainly looking to get MMO titles onto the Xbox 360, so an Age of Empires online might be the plan... or we could be barking up the wrong tree of course. Only time will tell.
