Sony claim UMD format success
But do studios agree?
Speaking to trade magazine MCV this week, Sony Computer Entertainment UK bigwig Ray Maguire denied suggestions that the UMD media format was a sales disappointment, insisting that the PSP format was doing just fine. UMD disks are used for both movies and games on the PlayStation Portable, and there was once the suggestion that the media could be used in other Sony devices too, a rumour which has since bubbled below the water line amid speculation that the format - especially on the movie front - is failing to shift the numbers Sony had perhaps hoped.

Maguire told MCV that Sony remained 'pleased' with the format, and insisted that the attachment ratio (the number of UMDs sold per PSP) was 'fantastic'. Maguire instead suggested that Sony's problems regarding the format are related to finding the right content for the format, pointing to the success of short films ahead of the usual DVD fodder.
With several companies assessing the value of releasing their films on the format, Sony have in the past suggested that cross-promotion is the best way forward for the format, bundling movies and other video on UMD with other PSP related products. More on this as we get it.
