Chinese couple battle for MMOG avatars
Whatever next...
A Chinese couple are currently going through divorce proceedings in the courts, but are struggling to reach an agreement on the division of property. This dispute doesn't stem from the kids, nor the house, not even the car - it is in fact over the ownership of several avatars from the game Legend of Mir 2. Mr Wang and Ms Ye met online whilst playing the game last year, marrying within four weeks. The addicted gamers then proceeded to open ten accounts with the game - with each subsequent character achieving level forty or fifty status. They decided to divorce in June.
The accounts are valued in the region of 50,000 Yuan (or about $6,500 US), but the dispute over who keeps the characters is growing ever-bitter - with Wang offering their apartment in return for the accounts, whilst Ye wants to sell the apartment, splitting the proceeds, and the LoM 2 accounts, equally. A compromise seems far off on this matter, but lawyers are working on it. This case certainly demonstrates the power of the MMOG in China. More soon.
