Supreme Commander is TA sequel

Chris Taylor returns

Game designer Chris Taylor is returning to his design roots with a brand new real-time strategy outing, the latest issue of PC Gamer magazine reveals, and what's more - this new offering is promised by Taylor to be the 'spiritual successor' to Total Annihilation. TA was first released by GT Interactive in 1996, redefining the RTS genre, and garnering such success that it is still popular today. The ground-breaking opus was created by Cavedog, sadly defunct now - and after the collapse Taylor went on to form Gas Powered Games, home of Dungeon Siege. Now, Taylor wants to return to the RTS genre, and despite failing to acquire the TA licence - now in Atari's hands, he's setting his sights on a sequel in all but name: Supreme Commander.

In SC we're promised an epic, inter-galactic war, featuring land, sea and air units. As 'supreme commander', players will be able to take charge of the action, directing units from up close and personal on the ground - and from a satellite view far above - and everything in between. 'Major units' will feature, futuristic monstrosities far larger than standard units, and these will rumble into battle alongside smaller tanks and the like.

In the unveiling, Taylor suggests he hopes to reinvigorate a stale RTS genre, injecting realism (massive craft will not even fit on the screen in ground view), and a greater emphasis on strategy. With battle tactics in mind, a 'Base commander' will be possible to direct resources and the like while you wage war. All in all, we're very excited. The game is out in 2006.

  4. This will be the true test to see if CT has learned from his mistakes, and I believe he has. This will be his Mark on the gaming community and once again redefine not only the genre, but gaming as a whole.
