PSP to take on iPod?

Whilst the PSP handheld's impressive connectivity is already well documented, the wireless LAN technology may be used for more than just OS upgrades in the future - with Sony already plotting more ambitious software to take advantage of their burgeoning gadget. Currently, the PSP can connect to the internet via a wireless access point in order to check for updates - a feature which will eventually add new game content and other oddments too, once software development is complete. Marketing magazine this week claimed however that the new software would progress beyond software to offer music downloads too, with the hope that a product functioning solo on the PSP might be able to rival Apple's iPod and iTunes dominance of the increasingly important download service market.

Sony may be hoping that the PSP will give their role in online media something of a boost, after recent efforts have failed to catch consumer imagination. Certainly, the outstanding functionality of the PSP may give them an eventual edge, with the opportunity existing for downloadable movies and other media; in addition to MP3s. The PSP downloads updates and other content to the optional memory stick, available in sizes up to 2gb at a cost. The success of such a service then is greatly dependent on several factors: the cost of storage media (falling), the availability of wireless access (sporadic) and of the course the quality and usability of Sony's software (unknown). We'll keep you posted.

don't listen to bob PSP RULES the ipod and the ipods are so expenseive plus you can't have games and movies on them.
This is really what we all gamers have been waiting, what I mean is that such powerful handheld console would be great for we gamers.
Hopefully it wil be cheap too!!!

man im buying a psp, but not for music....unless sony can think of a way to give me 5 gigs plus storage for music.

how high will the MB be on the Memory Sticks? At the moment I can get 128MB memory cards but thats it!!

The PSP Sucks. It has a 2 hour battery life, no exclusive ORIGINAL games, and is completely over-priced. THe DS is soooooo much better i already have 1 and am not thinking at all about getting a PSP. THEY SUCK!!!!

dude all the games for DS sucks and anyways the PSP battery life is 7 not 2 hours... DS graphics suck so bad .. and the games WOW they all suck . PSP has great graphics and the games rock. Seriously the DS is good now cuz of the touch screen but after a good week it will get boring .. SO I SAY GET THE PSP. DS is ½ that of the PSP

here's why ds is so much better. it can play ALL game boy games, All gameboy color games and ALLgameboy advance games. Also it is cheaper than psp and it can fold up. So while all the sony fanboys are playing psp, they will be getting more and more pissed at all the scratches on the screen, until they throw it out the window, while we are playing on our clean screen. psp has crappy button layouts aswell.
it worked 4 ps1 but won't work here. psp will end up like sony's biggest failure; the playstation pocket. anyways i hope you come to your senses and buy a psp. im done wasting my time here.

cmon guys. being a fanboy is great, but when it comes to these systems, just look at facts. now I'm not one of the people here screaming about anything, or saying anyone's an idiot for anything for any of that playground crap. Seriously none of the products that have been brought up (ipod, psp, ds) are bad products. they're all really great and that's why their all competing at the top.
about the PSP and MUSIC, which is what this whole topic is about- there's nop denying that the psp graphics are better than the DS's or...um..ipod's :p
and there's no denying that the DS's battery life is better than the PSP's (although only the stats given at the sony launch- 4-6 hours for games, 2-4 hours for music and movies). and the ipod beats them all out with battery life but has much more limited features.
its also true that the DS shouldnt even be brought up here because it has no support for playing mp3s or any other standerd user music format outside of it's games, so why bring it up? dont. this topiuc is about music.
when it comes to the ipod vs. PSP, there are several interesting comparison points:
-of course the ipod beats out the PSP in battery life and built in storage. that's a given, since the PSP is a gaming machine first and the ipod's a music machine before anything else.
-the PSP has wifi, and will be able to not only connect to the net to download updates and plausibly music, but also to actually play multiplayer games with people over the internet, not just shortrange wifi like the DS. fact. ipod has absolutely no wifi hardware at this point, so its not in the running for that kind of comparison.
-it might be cheaper for re-exisiting PSP owners to buy a 1gb card for $125 and use it to store music and movies, but that probably wouldnt be enough to sway someone looking for primarily a music player to buy the psp over the ipod.
-what probably would sway them, as well as being much more affordable than the ipod solution even with comparable storage, is the news that comes from the new announcement that sony will be opening up the (until now only proprietary) UMD format the develpoers and users, along with writers. that will mean that someone at home could buy a small pack of the cheap, 1.8 gb discs and put all the movies and music on them they want, turning them into super-small, super-high capacity cds, with their psp as the player. Since blank disc media like that is very very rarely expensive, and the discs hold so much, it would probably be a real chance for sony to take on mp3 (and ipod) sales.
-the one thing that seems to be misunderstood is that psps wouldnt (in this generation) be able to write to UMD discs, so the idea of using the PSP to download music directly onto the game machine and from there write to blank UMDs wouldnt work. that would only work with the memory sticks, but ipod users have to use their home computer to load their ipods up with music, so the simple step of using your computer to burn a ton of music and movies onto the UMD disc before taking them with you (like you would a CD for your car) probably would be a fine solution.

iv tried to put internet on the PSP, but its hard cz my instructions are all in japanese...fair doo's tho, cz kinda got it in china...lol! cheap thoo..yay! but PSP R DA BESTttt!!!!
i have an ipod 60gb photo and it rocks but i also love my vids so i'm in the middle here i wish my ipod could play movies and it would be great i will proably gewt the psp and still keep my ipod but if sony lowers the cost of the magicgate stix so i can stone alot of tunes then i'll use the psp alot more
I just don't know what PSP is and can snyone help me?! I have an iPod but I won't download any music on it yet for fear that it may take too much memory on my computer. I don't know if this is a bunch of poop I've been hearing or if it is the real deal, its just too much to gamble with. Please, anyone have any comments or answers for me?!

Glad to help. Hope you enjoy your iPod. I have one too and it works just as well or even better than a MP3 Player. But I really wouldn't know because I don't have a MP3 Player. I have just seen my friend's MP3.
