The Warhammer Online beta test entered its next phase over the weekend, officially becoming an 'open beta' in which all may participate as a full commercial debut looms ever nearer.

This should have been good news for developer Mythic, and European publisher Goa, unfortunately while servers opened successfully; closed-testers entering the open beta as planned; new players could not register and authenticate as those systems failed at the crucial moment.

The issues are being resolved now, and Goa's chief executive apologised in person via the official site.

"I rarely address players directly, but I wanted to write you as too few of you have been able to access the open beta today," offered Ghislaine Le Rhun.

"Today was a dark day. We expected a massive influx of players, but reality was even harsher. I personally commit that we will communicate to you as clearly as possible on the resolution of these current issues."

Systems should be fixed late this morning, we hear, Goa battling intense demand and unspecified "serious problems".

More on this as we get it.
