Command and Conquer - it does exactly what it says on the tin. You Command, then you Conquer. A simple formula that once revolutionised the RTS world. The last release in the series, Generals, finally took what was a stagnating series into the modern 3D world and was one of the most enjoyable examples of the genre in recent times. Well soon that game is going to get its first expansion pack, and boy do the boys at developers EA LA have something special lined up for us in Zero Hour.

For your money you will get what could very easily have been a sequel. In fact there's more new stuff in here then there was in many a sequel I've had the pleasure of being disappointed with. For a start there are the obligatory extra multiplayer maps, and a new single player campaign to get your teeth into. 25 and 15 levels respectively to steam your way through. There's also some updating to the Skirmish AI (of course) and a whole slew of new and enhanced graphical effects to marvel at. The original is probably one of the finest looking games out there still to this day, so how do you think it will look with weather effects, some snow or a little rain perhaps, not to mention a number of other visual enhancements? But it is the massive number of new units and upgrades available that will really blow the shoes off of even the most well booted of imperialist exploiters. 30 new units and structures will combine with 20 new upgrades and General's abilities to effectively turn the original into a whole new kettle of combat.

The GLA's arsenal will be improved by vehicles like the Battlebus, an armoured troop transporter that becomes a stationary bunker when the wheels have been shot off. The Combat Cycle can leap over cliffs and into an undefended rear area, carrying any one of the infantry types, making it effectively four new units in one. However, even though you will have the pleasure of swooping on the enemy with a squad of suicide bikers, there aren't plans to allow the mob to join in the fun, (a shame, you could stack them up like those pyramids of RAF guys that used to pop on Blue Peter every once in a while). Almost all of their units will now be able to salvage parts from the battlefield - tooled up Scud Launchers anyone? There's going be a super tunnel network which can burst up anywhere on the map that you have under your line of site, and those toiling workers will get little red shoes to slip on, improving their efficiency but robbing us of the pleasure of one of the funniest and most non-PC unit sounds ever.

The Chinese armoury will be boosted with an upgrade turning the Overlord into an Emperor Tank, a sturdier troop transporter that heals nearby foot soldiers and an ECM Tank that disables enemy units. How about an air-strike that rains down multiple nuclear warheads? I know I'm looking forward to protecting my hackers in the new Internet Centre, a place where they can make more money and have a cup of Mocha at the same time. Give it some upgrades and the Chinese finally have some spying abilities. Then there's the Helix 2, a chopper that can honestly lay claim to being a mammoth in the sky. Not only will enclosed infantry be able to shoot out of it, this aerial fortress can be upgraded just like the Overlord. Heck it can even carry one of these favourites in its belly. There's an improved bunker that can hold 10 men and withstand a hefty amount of damage and a GPS Scrambler that will disrupt incoming missiles. Their structures can now be fortified with the new EMP mines, too.

Not bad, good review, the extra Neutral units really should've been included from the start, all looks like this add on was planned from the start, can't fault EAP on the marketing eh?

  2. Sam 5 years ago Staff

It seems to be a 'feature' of games today that many of the features of games which are included in the hype get dropped for the original release only to appear in the expansion pack. It's kinda like buying a vodka, waiting for 5 mintues, then buying the coke as not a dash but a seperate drink.

Knowing EA, they will do anything to optimize their profits, they probably took the very original version, looked and said, 'Hey, we could probably get off with selling this at the same price while cutting off some features for the Expansion'. You have to admit, looking at it from EA's view, it must have been bloody tempting to screw its customers and it's work force's pay slips (for the exp) by doing this.

On the other hand, as long as this expansion pack is a fair pirce, I'll pay it, I'm looking at 20 to 30 euro, no more or Im out the door with these new EA C&Cs.

Snow has been done with the original C&CG, rain would be just as easy. Alot of these "new" units are available in fan made mods. Its more like they've taken the best fan based modding community and just rebranded it as theirs. If you ever saw their hype on the RA2 Offical boards before they removed them you'll see alot of their "promises" where just HYPE. What they didn't achieve with the original they have added to the expansion. The ability to play with multiple generals was scrapped from the original and has been reenabled in fan made mods that are just as good as a professional game.

Hey, would you guys stop insulting EA until after the game comes out? I mean come on... your basing all of your facts on this review while you yourselves havent even played it. I think EA can make a good game and until i play it, stay partially neutral on this matter.

too true, although many have tried, many have also failed, and the only TRUELY good Generals mod (And perhaps, the slightly more realistic) is SecondWave, compared to mods such as 'Generals X' which was nice, but a little over-balanced, and stuff was WAY too costly... that and SecondWave is destined for ZeroHour by the sounds of it...

Wiil it crash like the original with the blue screen of death, or maybe a different colour this time!

Have been reading the comments so far about Zero Hour, and alot of it sounds like a souped Generals X. I have been wanting zero hour to have alot more Naval wars, since there is plenty of land wars. I just hope it is worth it.

    That is very good

  10. Hostage Unregistered 5 years ago

I have played Mods in which it sounds similar to the expansion, ProGen in which they use the different generals and is a very professionally well done game. it even goes as far as to have an EULA and a new intro video. A very well done mod and Nearly as many changes and features as Zero Hour. I will be picking up Zero Hour today because it does look and sound good and hopefully will be better(at least different) than the mods that have been out.

After playing C&C generals and then moving to this for a time, I have to say that the game is seriously just luck depending on one thing: what you happen to choose against whom. There is very little skill involved. With as fast as the GLA are building their tunnels now, everyone should just choose GLA toxin and go build in the other person's base. Unless of course they are GLA...then you might actually have a game.
