Xbox big wig Shane Kim has told Wired that no one can be sure which format will win the current generation hardware war, and that conjecture is pointless, given the possibility that there will be no clear victor in the tussle between the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3.

"Are we just amusing ourselves by trying to declare a winner and loser while the customers are still out there deciding? This is only the third year of our existence and only the second year of Sony and Nintendo’s existence," he offered.

"[Sony are] a very good company but not a company that has won a generation in quite a long time. Will they get to expand beyond 35, 40 million to 100 million? Will anybody? I mean, that’s going to be an interesting thing to see: Will there be a clear-cut winner like there has been in the last two generations?"

Kim believes a winner will be obvious when one format is rapidly closing in on 100 million unit sales, the Wii presently looking the most likely to get anywhere near such a milestone.
