Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal has been announced as the star of Jerry Bruckheimer's new Prince of Persia movie adaptation, he'll star opposite Gemma Arterton.

The Hollywood Reporter also let slip that the new film's plot will be based on Ubisoft's superb Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time release, Ubi Montreal's action-adventure re-igniting interest in the classic 'IP'.

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has been helping with the script, while Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) will direct. The film will take place in the 6th Century, and sees the Prince and Princess Tamina trying to save The Sands of Time from the clutches of a dangerous nobleman.

Filming will take place in Morocco and England.

A release next year is on the cards.
