Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
The favourite of old returns reminding Chris of his ill-spent youth.

It’s finally here, the long awaited next generation Mortal Kombat game, and am I excited, of course I am. What could be more exciting than the prospect of fighting as the old greats in the MK kingdom such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero but in all new arenas, against new and insane characters and with vastly improved graphics. This is all conjecture so here’s hoping it can live up to my mammoth expectations.
The story has moved on from the last instalment of the MK dynasty. It’s fairly straight forward, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung have teamed up to form a "deadly alliance", hence the title, but they have killed the enigmatic Liu Kang! As one of a selection of 24 characters you have to fight on the side of good or evil through a series of battles until you are crowned MK champion. You start-off with a choice of just 12 characters most of whom you should recognise (Sub-Zero, Kano, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Lao Kang, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi) and a few you won’t. The new characters are fairly interesting with the notable exception of the fat drunk one! The old characters have all their old special moves still available so you can still fire Scorpion’s harpoon and rip out someone’s still-beating heart with Kano (delightful – Ed). They remain highly unchanged in looks, as well, and the graphics for some of the moves are distinguishably poor at times. But this is made-up for with the immense variety of moves you can pull off. With the addition of each character having his own unique fighting style, one of which is a “weapon” style, you cannot cease to be amazed by the number of combos you can pull off.
There is a whole new layout to the basic mode. You have the standard modes of arcade and 'versus' which are the same but they have employed a new system called Konquest. This is basically a vehicle for you to learn each of the characters three fighting styles (which I’ll come back to later). You go on a journey and, depending on which character you chose, you get training missions which help to tell each individual story for why they are fighting in the tournament. For each successful completion you are awarded varied coloured 'koins' which can be spent in the ‘krypt’ (see what they are doing with the whole K thing). The Krypt is a set of coffins with prices above them. There are hundred of coffins with varied prices on them. They contain anything from hidden characters (Reptile, Rayden, Jax, etc), to stills of the game designer. This is a very neat addition and my only real qualm about it is that you have to earn a hell of a lot of koins to unlock anything decent in the Krypt and then it is still a gamble that you might get an image of the Game designers girlfriend! This aside it does increase the gameplay of what is at best a limited genre.
The graphics are a real sticky point. The arenas are interesting and well formed yet they lack the crispness of Tekken 4 and are limited in interaction with the characters barring a few token pillars and statues which can be exploded if you walk near them. The new characters are all substantially original and they all have smooth moves and style, but at times it feels like the older characters have just been slightly modified, with the notable exception of Reptile. It’s nice to see, however, that the moves seem to flow nicely from one to the next.
The sound in MK has always been of the best standard and as soon as I loaded the game for the first time I was humming the familiar darkly brooding tunes. It is always nice to see a game that pays attention to these smaller parts of production as the music is a nice balance between presence and annoyance. Beware, however, overplaying this game as you may get the soundtrack playing in your dreams. That is nothing to sniff at believe you me.
What this game is all about however, the same as all beat ‘em up games, is the multiplayer element. Importantly the multiplayer game is straightforward and with a multitude of moves for each character it very rarely descends into a game of who can tap the buttons fastest. The vast moves allow for you to vary and confuse your opponent. This is where the game really comes into it’s own.
Inevitably you have to compare this game to the competition and it is sad to say it’s no Tekken 4. It is both graphically lacking and the Konquest mode is so laborious one can get easily bored on their own. It is a shame too that the fatalities, which are excellent entertainment, are so infuriatingly difficult to pull-off. For lovers of the MK world this will stave off the boredom for a while but you’ll soon wipe the dust off your old Megadrive and sob to yourself whilst playing Mortal Kombat 2. You just can’t beat it.
