News reaches us this morning of a new update released by processor manufacturer AMD, who claim their new software can improve video performance in games. The patch covers the Athlon 64 FX processor family, and relates specifically to dual-core and multi-processor systems, we're reliably informed.

The so-called 'AMD Dual-Core Optimizer' is created for games which naughtily ignore Windows' time-stamp counter, which can impact frame-rates and the like. Apparently, AMD are of the view that Windows can compensate for the effect power management processes have on the CPU's timer - but the CPU itself can't. And of course that makes total sense. To us.

This patch therefore replicates the compensation undertaken by the operating system, to hopefully improve performance in games which ignore Windows' own operations designed to adjust for this. All of which doesn't mean a great deal on paper, but you should probably install it if you've got an Athlon 64 FX system regardless. AMD.com should sort you out...
