MMO lady faces prison over online 'murder'
Court looms for Kyushu avatar-killer
A Japanese woman could face a real-world prison sentence after murdering her virtual husband, who she met and married in online game Maple Story.
The 43 year-old lady was apparently enraged after her virtual beaux 'divorced' her, prompting her to log into his account, using his user details, and delete is in-game avatar.
"I was suddenly divorced - without a word of warning. That made me so angry," a Sapporo police official quoted her as saying, when she was arrested (in her distant home town of Miyazaki) for illegally accessing a computer and 'manipulation' of electronic data.
If convicted, the Piano teacher could face up to five years in prison, or a fine in excess of 3,000 GBP.
This isn't the first case of virtual crime reaching real world courts, and it's unlikely to be the last. Thanks to The Guardian.
