Sony executive Kaz Hirai, boss of all things PlayStation, has said that gaming can persevere through an economic downturn. The big cheese says that while other businesses might struggle, he believes gaming can come through tough times by keeping people 'excited'.

"As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries," he told the FT this week.

Hirai added that there won't be a PS3 price cut this side of Christmas, assuring to the financially-leaning newspaper that prices will remain unchanged.

Sony's man isn't the first to suggest games can ride out the economic storm, the general consensus being that people might in fact be more likely to buy games when times are tough; folks opting to stay home rather go out drinking, eating and holidaying.
