The DS may be the world's best-selling games platform at present; with Nintendo having announced that a new model - the DSi - will be out in Japan next month, but rival Sony are less-than-impressed.

SCEA marketing boss John Koller has told Gizmodo that he believes the DSi won't be enough to entice users beyond Ninty's '12 year-old male' demographic. Ouch.

"I can see the DSi being successful," the big cheese conceded. "The DS lite was obviously very successful. Will DSi do well with [the DS’s] demographic? It probably will. Will it be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12? I’m not sure."

He added, however, that the new handheld will inevitably sell well, even if there are question marks over whether it is 'enough'. Your thoughts, players?

although it may be true that it's likely to sell well to kids, that might no be true, if the dsi can log onto pages such as myspace, or play youtube videos, i'm sure it'll catch on to teens too, and possibly adults. i mean i'm a 19 year old and i can honestly say i enjoy playing ds games more than psp ones, not because i don't like psp, but because it's a lot more interactive using the touch screen and sometimes the microphone, and much easier connecting to others to play multiplayer due to the single cart option in a lot of games on ds. I'm pretty sure a majority of people are looking at the game downloading capability, wifi, and new camera features. I'm sure it'll sell well, to both adults and children, perhaps with children first, then over time it'll sell to adults after they realize it's capability. It really all depends on the games that come out for it, not the system.

Sony are a bit clueless if they think the success of the DS is purely down to under 12s...

Ever heard of Brain Training? Eyesight Training? Wine-tasting games? Cookery programs? Sudokus? In the region where the DSi has launched, most sales are to adults.
