If you thought the aging PS2 had done well when it comes to lifetime sales then prepare to be amazed because SCEE president David Reeves has been speaking about Sony's belief that the PS3 will eventually overtake it.

Despite the slightly slow start to its life the PS3 is picking up steam somewhat now and Reeves says: "The PS3 install base is growing faster that the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle."

"The next five years are going to be turbulent. But I think it is going to be the most exciting period that we have ever seen in the past ten years of video games,"

A bold boast considering the competitiveness of this console generation compared to the relatively free run of things Sony had last time around with the Nintendo's Gamecube never coming close to competing and Microsoft’s first Xbox having its useful life cut short.

Microsoft is taking control of 3D graphics with ATI and NVidia having to keep up with Microsoft standards such as DirectX 10.1. Microsoft has a massive advantage over Sony in every key area of console technology. The biggest advantage being software development and tools which leads to much lower development costs for studios. The next XBOX will be an evolutionary upgrade with faster CPU and GPU bluray and digital TV - sony can not afford to keep up.

PS3 has so much potential and yet 80% of it is not being used. 360 on the other hand has used all its capacity. Unless Microsoft make a new Xbox or upgrade it then PS3 will overtake it in a matter of maybe a year. With Sony making it even easier to link everything via wifi to the PS3, Sony are making a master Multimedia Console.
