While Microsoft's ambitious Halo movie project has slid from view in the last six months, studio wrangling over financial details seeing the project put on the back burner, there is still a glimmer of hope we learn.

Latino Review report that Pirates of the Caribbean writer Stuart Beattie has penned a non-commissioned script for the film, which is now being shopped on the open market.

Alex Garland, of "The Beach" fame, had previously created a million-dollar script to be put into production by Lord of the Rings director and avid gamer Peter Jackson.

The new script is rumoured to be based on the Halo novel, "Fall of Reach", and is seemingly unrelated to the original movie plans which Neill Blomkamp was to direct.

We've no official word on this, so take this as mere gossip until anything emerges from Microsoft - or former studio partners Fox and Universal - on the matter.
