With HD-DVD having officially collapsed last month, Toshiba withdrawing support for the next-gen DVD format, Microsoft have today finally conceded that they are looking at ways to support Sony's rival Blu-ray format.

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer told the Mix08 conference stateside that: "We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like."

He told attendees that the "world moves on", as has Toshiba. "We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," the Chief Executive promised.

A Blu-ray add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 now looks more likely, although Ballmer stopped short of revealing specific details on Microsoft's plans.

More on this very soon, we'd wager.
