Sony are in the midst of discussions with Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive alongside the Xbox 360, a Sony representative has revealed.

The Financial Times says that the secret discussions between the usually competing firms were revealed by Sony Electronics US boss Stan Glasgow, who also reveals that talks with Apple are ongoing.

Microsoft have gone on the record recently denying they have any concrete plans to make a Blu-ray drive for the 360, execs hinting that they might focus on the Live Video Marketplace instead.

For their part, Apple have also declined offering a Blu-ray drive to customers so far, instead also focussing on digital distribution, however Sony are confident the physical nature of Blu-ray discs will win-out, customers preferring the format as the best way of embracing the HD content revolution.

Blu-ray drive prices are expected to fall this year, we're told.

"We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available," replied Microsoft. Meh.
