Hollywood rallies behind Blu-ray

With Toshiba's defunct HD-DVD now all but consigned to the annuls of technology history, every major Hollywood studio has now signed to Sony's Blu-ray next-gen DVD format - presenting a clear path forward for a de facto high-definition media standard.

"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," announced Paramount, switching sides from HD-DVD to Blu-ray.
"As we look to releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."
News reports state that Paramount's move sees every major filmmaker now backing Sony's format. But what of Microsoft? Will they persevere with downloadable Marketplace movie releases, or is an external Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360 even now being planned?
