Valve Software's unusual Portal has won the eighth annual Game Developers Choice Award, news from San Francisco reveals.

Valve's puzzler also won the Best Game Design and Innovation Awards, during the ceremony in delightful San Francisco.

BioShock was also a GDC winner, taking Best Audio, Best Visual Arts and Best Writing gongs.

Crackdown was the Best Debut Game, fl0w was the Best Downloadable, Best Handheld went to Phantom Hourglass, while Crysis won for Best Technology.

The Lifetime Achievement award went to Sid Meier, Ralph Baer winning a Pioneer Award for creating the first home console.

Indie game awards were also dished out to Crayon Physics Deluxe, World of Goo and Synaesthete.
