With the death of the officially licensed, Microsoft-backed Marvel Universe, previous developer Cryptic last week revealed that they would instead release a new 'unofficial' superhero-themed MMO title - "Champions Online".

First details on the new online game are now available, and low and behold the game does carry some official licensing, from 1980's pen and paper RPG Champions.

Unique cel-shaded visuals are promised, and the focus of the new MMO will apparently be on action and combat. Highly customisable characters will be on offer, and the game will be set in outer-space and alternate dimensions, we're told.

In crafting your own superhero avatar, you'll even be able to include back story, modify powers, and create an arch-rival in the process.

The game will be released in spring 2009, and Cryptic will publish the game themselves.

"Bringing the operating side of the business in-house enables us to be more efficent, get our developers even closer to the customer, and ultimately make a better game and long-term experience," beamed Cryptic president Michael Lewis.

Cross platform play between PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game may even be offered, according to GameInformer magazine stateside, we'll keep you posted.
