A new global World of Warcraft tournament will begin in April, with Blizzard lifting the lid on a contest to reward those players doing best in their Arena combat system.

A grand prize of 75,000 USD is up for grabs (about one cup of coffee in central London), and the tournament will take place on a special server where combatants can instantly conjure a level 70 character. Epic equipment will be added and a level playing field will be created, with the focus then becoming skill and strategy.

While the Arena system offers combat to teams of two, three and five, the contest will focus on three-on-three tussles.

"eSports is one of the most exciting facets of online gaming today," beamed Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "We're pleased to expand World of Warcraft's tournament options for players who want to focus mainly on the competitive aspect of the game."

More soon.
