Microsoft are kicking off a new video-making contest this week, the Redmond giant challenging gamers to create short flicks about Master Chief, with the winner earning the right to study for a month at an LA film academy.

Called Halo: Recut, the contest is open to all European gamers over the age of 18, with submissions running between the last day of January and the 21st of March 2008.

MS want budding film makers to create flicks set away from the traditional Halo universe, "whether its Master Chief’s 'Meet the Parents', a Spartan high school reunion, or even break dancing to MC Hammer," according to the press release.

You can use whatever tools are at your disposal, video, in-game footage, animation, et al, and those entering can bag copies of the game and free consoles, should they be judged the best in their region. A Europe-wide contest, judged by Bungie, will then see the academy prize awarded. This will include flights to LA, accommodation, car rental, 2,000 USD cash and a month's fun at the New York Film Academy in LA.

We'll keep you posted on this. You can bag more details via the official site.
