BBFC to challenge Manhunt 2 in High Court
Video Appeal Committee challenged
British videogame sensors the BBFC have opted to challenge Manhunt 2's right to be released in the High Court, despite the Video Appeal Committee over-turning the board's effective ban of Rockstar's controversial action title.
The BBFC believe that the Video Appeal Committee approved the release of the ultra-violent game based upon a misinterpretation of the law. The BBFC had originally deemed the game unfit for release, refusing the game a certification back in the summer, a move Rockstar have been battling ever since.
"I have taken into account the high public interest in the possibility of harm to children," stated Justice Wyn Williams, stating that the BBFC's High Court appeal can go ahead. The BBFC is concerned that the over-turning sets a dangerous precedent, and believes that there is simply too great a risk that the title might be played by minors.
The High Court challenge will be heard before January 31st. Rockstar, meanwhile, believe that their game is indeed unsuitable for kiddies, but should be made available to responsible adults.
