Perhaps all is not quite lost for the Xbox 360 in Japan, despite the console having suffered a protracted spell of torrid sales following launch. The launch of Japanese favourite Ace Combat 6 has been credited with boosting sales of the system in the land of the rising sun, with Microsoft's machine hitting the number two spot in the latest figures.

Word from Japan has it that the Xbox 360 sold some 16,000 units in the week ending November 4th, putting it roughly level with the PlayStation 3. Ace Combat 6 sold 65,000 copies in its first week of release, entering the charts a distant second to Mario Galaxy, with sales of 250,000 for the week.

Numbers on the console come via Famitsu, and while it is unlikely to mark a turn-around in the console's fortunes, it shows the Xbox 360 can compete on occasion. Halo 3, for example, hit the number one spot in Japan for a brief spell - the traditionally Xbox-ambivilent Japan also buying into the intense hype surrounding the title.

We'll bring you more on such bean-counting soon.
