Valve consider move away from episodic content?
Episode Three the last?
The latest word in today informs us that Valve Software's third Half-Life 2 episode, the imaginatively titled Half-Life 2: Episode Three, could be the developer's last episodic release for quite some time.
"I think what we really want to do is have a couple of examples out there - Episode One, and how long it was to play and how long it took to develop, Episode Two, Portal and TF2 and then the third part of the trilogy; and then sit down with the community and say, 'OK, so what do you want?'" Valve boss Gabe Newell revealed in an interview with CVG.co.uk.
Newell explained that episodic content a la Half-Life 2 makes it easier and quicker to deliver content and technology to gamers, but that the developer are keen to see if this is what their community want, or epic individual projects of greater significance, like the original Half-Life 2.
"'Do you want us to do more episodes? Do you want us to really tighten down the time frames and look at the scope of what we're doing so that that's possible, for us to go back to the large monolithic projects?'"
Newell added that he'd like to sit down for a chin-wag with Sam & Max developer Telltale to talk about their own experience with episodic content. More soon.
