Having pleased some corners of the games industry by announcing that the 60gb model PS3 was reduced by 100 USD from the beginning on this week, Sony have now revealed that the 499 USD offer will only last as long as present 60gb PS3 stocks persist. This will then only leave the 80gb model system to carry the PlayStation 3 forward, costing 599 USD with a copy of MotorStorm.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves revealed the US model and pricing plan when questioned over European plans not to discount the console (a 425 GBP 60gb PS3 bundle was announced today, including two games an extra controller). He was asked why a cheaper model wasn't being announced, like America, to which he responded: "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

The European president then confirmed that the 60gb model PS3 would disappear once present stocks are cleared - probably by the end of this month.

Quite what the industry will make of this move remains to be seen, but it is disappointing that no long-term discounting has been offered after all.

A quick bit of research finds that consumers can buy 80 gig 2.5" drives cheaper then a comparably performing 60 gig one.

It's like Sony set their execs a compo to see which one could assplode the goodwill from their conference the best. It's a close race and is going to make writing the PS3 wrap-up article a lot of fun :)
