The Church of England has announced that it will send a letter outlining their concerns to Sony Computer Entertainment, as the row over the use of Manchester Cathedral as a backdrop in PS3 title Resistance: Fall of Man looks set to rumble on.

The institution is demanding that Sony remove images of the Cathedral from the first-person shooter, issue a public apology, and support the Church's anti gun-crime initiatives in the city. Sony have responded to the criticisms already, pointing out that the game is fiction 'like Dotctor Who', and stating that all 'permissions necessary' had previously been sought. The Church disputes this, and are threatening legal action over the matter.

Sony state they will try to understand the Church's concern 'in more detail', while numerous groups have now backed the Church's stance against the game, which has so far sold over one-million copies.

Church leaders will meet today to pen a letter, which the BBC reports will demand the following:

  • An apology for using the cathedral
  • Withdrawal of the game, or modification of the section of the game to remove the cathedral interior
  • Sony to make a substantial donation from the games' profits allowing the cathedral's education department to target more effectively those aged 18 to 30
  • Sony to support other groups in Manchester fighting against gun crime
